The Cranky Executive

A high-ranking and valued manager in a manufacturing firm was a beloved favorite of her boss and her direct reports, but was decidedly unpopular with some of her peers. When I surveyed her co-workers, it turned out she had developed a toxic relationship with one of them: a young man the executive felt was arrogant. This affected the executive’s mood and conduct during division meetings. Everyone around these two turf warriors was uncomfortable and on-edge because they never knew when to expect the next blow up between the executive and the young man. It brought out the worst in the executive’s personality and created tension throughout the team. We agreed to work on this behavior.

Although the executive was resistant at first, I asked her to examine her own self-and-world construct to discover the source of her aversion to the young man. Ultimately, she was able to assume responsibility for her own thinking, reactions, and behavior. When coached to approach her co-worker from a different point of view, the man responded favorably, and with obvious relief. He too had been suffering from the tension and he welcomed the executive’s new behavior. Their relationship changed dramatically and continues to improve. The executive was able to rehabilitate her image in the organization and looks forward to a brilliant career there.
