The Manager Who Refused to Apologize

During an important, tension-filled meeting, an engineering manager lost his temper and yelled at his co-workers. The meeting attendees were so shocked by his behavior the incident was reported to the CEO, who threatened to terminate the manager. The manager’s supervisor expected an apology, but the manager refused, insisting the meeting attendees had “gotten over it.” Trying to save the manager’s job, the supervisor asked that a coach be hired to work with the manager.

No amount of hoping on his part was going to make this episode blow over without an apology, so during the coaching engagement I helped the manager understand what he was about to miss. With my guidance, the manager came to realize the apology was a golden opportunity. By apologizing, he could acknowledge to his peers he had made a mistake; but also create an emotional contract between himself and the people he offended. Because of his expression of accountability, they would be much more likely to have confidence in his intention to change. The apology he was avoiding so studiously was likely to have an almost magical restorative effect on his career.

It was hard, but he made the apology, which raised his stock in the company exponentially and ensured his career was stable and secure once again.

He is still happily employed, and well respected, in his company.
